“I must be right. Never an aspirin. Never injured a day in my life. The whole country, the whole world, should be doing my exercises. They’d be happier.”
The Pilates System focuses on the center, or core of the body – what we refer to as the “Powerhouse.” With this focus, Pilates works to build strength and flexibility with control. Contrary to the practice of repetitive exercise, Pilates prefers fewer, more precise motions which is a more efficient way of exercising. Choosing from over 500 exercises, the Pilates instructor creates an optimum workout for maximum results for each client.
A Pilates workout can range from a gentle session for clients recovering from an injury to a challenging workout for professional athletes and dancers. Every aspect of a Pilates workout is satisfying because the entire body is engaged. Completing a workout will leave you feeling refreshed and energized.
Introductory SessionThis free, initial visit gives us an opportunity to meet and discuss your exercise/movement background and experience, provide you with answers to your concerns and questions about beginning a program, show you the studio and facilities, and discuss our best recommendation for a program to fit your needs. It is your chance to get a feel for the "chemistry" here at Joe's Place and gather the information you need to make an informed decision about starting your Pilates practice. There is no cost or obligation associated with this introductory visit. We want you to feel completely comfortable with who we are, where we are, and what we have to offer before making your investment in Pilates, and in Joe's Place. 30-45 minutes.
The assessment sessions allows time for a fitness interview, injury history and assessment, goal setting, and postural analysis, as well as your first Pilates training session. This one-on-one session allows us to create the most effective, individualized program and plan. This assessment session is great for new clients, and helpful for current clients who are further along
in their program whenever they feel the need to re-assess and review.
80-minutes.
New clients begin with a series of private sessions in order to learn each exercise with proper form and alignment, as well as the specific order in which it is performed. These sessions consist of both apparatus and matwork and allow the instructor to develop a customized system of exercises to address each client’s needs, goals, and previous injuries or conditions. We recommend continuing private sessions until you are able to set up the equipment with assistance and are familiar with your workout. More advanced clients benefit from one-on-one instruction to improve precision, add new exercises to their workout program, work on a specific issue, or work on injury rehabilitation. Private sessions are 50-55 minutes.
Once your workout is established, semi-private sessions are a great way to continue. In a semi-private session, two or three clients are matched to ability and work together with one instructor. These sessions are lively and motivating and when done 2-3 times each week, really deliver visible and lasting results. Many clients take a mix of semi-private and private sessions. This way they can continue their focused personal training with the cost benefits of semi-privates. Semi-private sessions are 50-55 minutes.

Joseph Pilates’ research and education encompassed western and eastern medicine, yoga, ancient Greek philosophies, karate, anatomy, mathematics, and engineering. Over his lifetime he developed a unique scientific system of body conditioning that transformed the health and bodies of those who practiced his method. The basis of his work is a series of exercises performed on a mat. The mat work emphasizes quality and precision rather than quantity of repetitions. Each exercise, performed in sequence, is designed not only to strengthen and stretch but to integrate your body’s muscles so that correct form and posture become a part of your daily activities throughout life. The mat work teaches us that the most important tool to achieve physical fitness is the body itself. Our Open Mat Classes can help get you started with your Pilates practice, or complement your apparatus work. Classes are 50 minutes long with a maximum of 8 participants. Drop-in, no pre-registration required but online sign-up is recommended.

Working together in a small group, you’ll learn the beginner level Pilates mat exercises, and be introduced to some of the guiding principles and concepts of the Pilates method. During the series, you will build upon your knowledge, practicing and reviewing exercises. You will begin to understand how to access your Powerhouse muscles and work to maintain that engagement through movement. You will become familiar with your beginning safe ranges of motion and how to tell when you’re ready to increase the challenge by increasing your range of motion. And the instructor will provide you with any modifications you may need for weakness, injury or discomfort. Classes are 50 minutes, with 5-8 participants per class.
